Unforgettable Scene – DIF II Ending

Credits: louislp4ever @ youtube

I will never forget the ending to Detective Investigation Files 2. The tearful, heartbreaking scene at the airport was too unbearable to watch! After witnessing the rollercoaster relationship between Jessie and Dai Yung, it was frustrating that we got a cliff hanger ending (but nevertheless it was in typical TVB style)!

I remember watching the ending in January 1996, but had to wait until September 1997 when DIF 3 was finally released. It was a very long wait, and unfortunately the third instalment was rather disappointing. The storyline and mystery cases were not up to par with the first two, and I found the overall feel of the series to be gloomy. The main characters had matured due to their experiences in part 2, but at the same time their lovable naivety and ‘sense of humour’ evaporated. The characters had become jaded.

Furthermore the rollercoaster that is Jessie and Dai Yung continued, but this time it was somewhat tiresome to watch. How many obstacles does this couple have to go through to be together??!! The best thing in number 3 was that we finally got a happy ending for the golden couple! However, it is rare for TVB to not break up a couple after so many instalments. Therefore it’s quite a feat that Jessie and Dai Yung were given a happy ending after three series. It is comforting to know that my beloved Jessie will always be with her knight in shining armour – forever! She will always be happy and live to the ripe old age of 100 with many great-grandchildren, and not ‘die’ out of the blue (or in other words be killed off by stupid TVB writers and executives). As I said before the positives to not having a sequel is that your favourite characters will truly have a fairytale ending.

Sequel to a lesser known love affair...

Kenix has been in the entertainment industry since 1993 and has filmed many TV series. My all-time favourite Kenix role is Jessie from the classic Detective Investigation Files series. I think Jessie 高婕 will always be my favourite (a very sentimental favourite). Back in 1995 I truly fell in love with Jessie – both her qualities and flaws – and as a result began a new hobby called Kenix Kwok. This ‘hobby’ has continued from high school to university to working life. I guess it wasn’t a phase, and I probably will never grow out of it…

Naturally I love Kenix’s other roles too. However I like most of them equally and it would be extremely difficult for me to rank my favourite Kenix roles. Oddly enough I do not have a favourite Kenix male co-star pairing. I can never pick one for some bizarre reason. I can never decide whether my favourite pairing is Kenix-Michael Tao or Kenix-Frankie Lam or Kenix-Julian Cheung or Kenix-Sunny Chan or Kenix-Joe Ma or … well the list goes on. BUT I do have a favourite male leading character in a Kenix TV series. However it is a bit of a left field choice. I think most fans would name their favourite male character as DIF’s Cheung Dai Yung (Michael Tao) or Remembrance’s Yam Hung Fei (Julian Cheung). I love Patrick Tam’s character in Seed of Hope – Nick Wu Lik Wang. I think I’m a bit infatuated with the character!

I found Patrick’s Nick to be intriguing, charismatic and very sexy. I thought Patrick brought an air of complexity and mystery to his character, aided also by his tall dark looks. Plus he looked mighty fine in his suits!

The story between Kenix and Patrick in Seed of Hope was nothing original, but I was still drawn to their relationship. There’s always something romantic about two lonely hearts from very different worlds meeting and developing a unique connection and bond. They trusted each other and were able to share their darkest secrets – a sad, heartbreaking, and affectionless childhood, tainted by the betrayal from those who were meant to protect and love them.

I want to see how their relationship develops beyond the final scene of the series. I want to see how Kenix overcomes her childhood scars to truly let Patrick into her heart. I think we were only seeing the beginning of her ‘recovery’ towards the end of the series. I’m eager to see the rest of her journey. Seed of Hope is the only series I desperately want a sequel. Having said that I would not mind if they made sequels to Kenix’s other series (she of course has to be in it!). However the chance of a SOH2 is very, very unlikely – in other words it would never happen. Even though it had some interesting plots and raised some important social issues, it may be too slow pace and boring for some. Furthermore not many people remember the series and is probably one of the lesser known Kenix series. Thus the ‘love affair’ between Kenix and Patrick is unfortunately not rich in many people’s minds. But one of the positives to not having a TVB-produced sequel is you know that the love affair between the leading man and woman will last forever!

1969

Finally Kenix has updated her blog. It’s definitely been a long wait since her last entry. Nowadays, unlike yester years, Kenix news is rare. Unfortunately there’s no news on her next project, but nevertheless we get a little insight into her life. Kenix has taken up Latin dancing and badminton! She’s taking Latin dancing lessons from a teacher arranged by friend Cheng Ming Ming, and playing badminton with friends.

I’m happy that Kenix is enjoying her lifestyle and taking a well-deserved break from filming, but like many of her fans, I am anxious to know when she will announce or reveal her next acting project. It has been 14 months since she finished filming her last series Hong Fen (‘Red Powder’ with Chilam Cheung). Though 14 months is nothing when you compare it to the 14 years Idy Chan Yuk Lin fans had to wait to hear the news that their idol accepted a new acting role. Like many TVB watchers, I remember Idy from the 1983 version of the Return of the Condor Heroes. I’m not familiar with her work, but got to know her work a bit better from fellow blogger Michelle from http://michellebeloved.blogspot.com/ .

I have played badminton a few times for fun, but when I was taught the actual rules of the game, it was a little complex for me to grasp whilst playing at the same time. Give me tennis any day LOL! I grew up with tennis – both watching and playing. I even flew to Melbourne to watch the Australian Open a few years ago to watch the tennis. Unfortunately my all time favourite player Steffi Graf, the legendary Steffi Graf, was no longer playing. Since her retirement in 1999, my passion for tennis has never been the same. I still enjoy it but not as intensely and crazily as when Graf was still hitting her opponents off the court with her formidable forehand. Though I think I would not have survived the match if I had the opportunity to watch Graf play from the stands. I would probably have a heart attack after the first point! I remember my heart would pound so fast whenever I watched her play a single point on the TV. I remember waking up in the middle of the night to watch her play in the French Open, Wimbledon and the US Open. I even remember taping some of her matches whilst simultaneously watching it on TV. Luckily the matches I taped she had won or else the tapes would have been destroyed!

Her achievements in a nutshell:

Graf won 107 singles titles, including 22 Grand Slam titles and held the No. 1 ranking for a record 377 weeks. She’s the only player, man or woman, to win the “Golden Slam”: all four majors plus Olympic gold, which she did in 1988. Graf won 7 Wimbledon titles, six French Opens, 5 U.S. Opens, and 4 Australian Opens.

Coincidentally, the two women (career-wise) I followed religiously whilst growing up were both born in 1969. Kenix is married to fellow actor Frankie Lam, while on the other hand, Graf is married to fellow tennis great Andre Agassi and has two beautiful kids. I hope Kenix and Frankie will have kids too. Hopefully very soon. But if Kenix does have kids, it may be likely that I have to wait 14 years before I lay eyes on another Kenix series ...
